AMBLESIDE ST MARY WAR MEMORIAL

Located in St Mary's Church, Ambleside the memorial consists of eight oak panels, carved in Gothic style, flanking the High Altar, with an attendant wooden board mounted on the South wall of the choir. The board has a raised centre section and a carved frieze of roses and fluting. Within the raised section is an incised rubricated Latin cross, flanked by painted red panels bearing a carved Latin motto. The incised inscription is gilded. Along the bottom another red-painted panel bears a carved motto in English. There are 24 names listed for World War 2 only. The memorial was dedicated 12 December 1947 by the Bishop iof Penrith.

BARROW Harry
Air Mechanic 2nd Class FAA/FX. 561956, H.M.S. Striker, Royal Navy (Fleet Air Arm). Accidentally killed at sea when he was stuck by a Wildcat V, serial number JV442, of 824 Squadron, which broke through the barrier when landing on board H.M.S. Striker 16 August 1944. Aged 34. Born 24 November 1909 in Brathay, Westmorland. Son of William James and Sarah Barrow; husband of Dorothy Margaret Barrow, of Ambleside, Westmorland. In the 1921 census he was the son of William and Sarah Barrow, aged 11, born Ambleside, resident Church Street, Ambleside, Westmorland. From 3 June 1924 he was an Apprentice Shipsmith working for Barrow-In-Furness Shipbuilding & Engineering, Lancashire. In 1931 he was a Joiner working for Barrow-In-Furness Shipbuilding & Engineering, Lancashire. In 1931, aged 21, he was a member of the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers, Ambleside branch, Carpenters & Joiners section. No known grave. Commemorated on LEE-ON-SOLENT MEMORIAL, Hampshire. COUPE, MiD Victor [James]

Bombardier 956698, 30 Field Regiment, Royal Artillery. Killed in action in Italy 16 July 1944. Aged 28. Born Manchester, Lancashire, resident Amblside, Westmorland. Son of Arthur and Edith L. Coupe, of Ambleside, Westmorland. B.A., Hons. (London). Mentioned in Despatches (MiD). Attested 1939. Buried in FOIANO DELLA CHIANA WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot II. Row J. Grave 6.

DODD Frank [Craighton]
Sergeant (Pilot) 1104391, 218 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Bomber Command). Killed in action flying out of Marham, Norfolk, in a Vickers Wellington IC, serial number Z8781, on night operations to Hanover when the aircraft was shot down by flak near Moordeich southwest of Bremen during a raid on Hanover, two of the crew survived and were captured, 4 August 1941. Aged 19. Native Ambleside, Westmorland. Son of William George and Miriam Dodd, of Ambleside, Westmorland. Buried in BECKLINGEN WAR CEMETERY, Niedersachsen, Germany. Plot 26. Row F. Grave 4.
DUDER Michael [Sedgwick]

Flight Sergeant (Pilot) 1152502, 12 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Bomber Command). Killed in action flying out of Binbrook, Lincolnshire, in a Vickers Wellington II, serial number Z8409, when the aircraft was shot down by a night fighter at Dreumel near Tiel, Netherlands, during a raid on Essen, one of the crew survived and was captured, 9 March 1942. Aged 19. Son of Alexander Francis and Constance Mary Duder, of Ambleside, Westmorland. Educated Bromsgrove School. Buried in UDEN WAR CEMETERY, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. Plot 1. Row E. Grave 13.

Sergeant (Air Gunner) 650233, 576 Squadron, Royal Air Force (Bomber Command). Killed in action flying out of Elsham Wolds, Lincolnshire, in an Avro Lancaster I, serial number ME687, on night operations to Dortmund when the auircraft was shot down homebound, crashing at Hiddingsel, five miles from Dulman, 23 May 1944. Aged 22. Native of Ambleside, Westmorland. Son of Ernest and Violet Monkman Greenwood, of Ambleside, Westmorland. His brother Keith Douglas also died on service but not listed here. Buried in REICHSWALD FOREST WAR CEMETERY, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Plot 27. Row D. Collective grave 1-11.
HEATON Joseph [Victor]
Lieutenant 121116, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) attached to 1st Battalion, Royal Lincolnshire Regiment. Missing in action between 16 and 17 February 1944. Aged 26. Born 9 September 1917 in Lancashire, resident Westmorland. Son of Joseph Rowland Heaton, and of Dorothy Heaton, of Norwich. B.A., Hons. (Oxon.): Christchurch. In the 1939 Register he was single, living from Private Means, resident Skelghyll Woods, Lake Road, Ambleside, The Lakes U.D., Westmorland. No known grave. Killed in Action

Official notification has just been received that Pte. James Middleton, aged 23, of Ambleside, who had been reported missing on September 14th, 1944, in North-West Europe, was killed in action on that date. He was the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Middleton. Millars Park. Ambleside. A Territorial, he had served from the outbreak of the war, and went, to France on D-Day

Aircraftman 1st Class 1019835, 84 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died at sea as a Japanese Prisoner of War 29 November 1943, he had been taken prisoner March 1942, based at Kalidjati, Java, and was lost on board the SS Suez Maru which was torpedoed off the Kangean Islands in the Java Sea by the U.S.S. Bonefish. Aged 31. Native of Ambleside, Westmorland. Son of James Byers Robson and Lily Agnes Robson; husband of Elsie Robson, of Ambleside, Westmorland. No known grave. Killed in action flying out of Abingdon, Berkshire, in a Armstrong Whitworth Whitley V, serial number LA787, on night operation Nickel, when the aircraft was lost without trace during a Nickel leaflet raid on the St Quentin area 29 February 1944. Aged 21. Born 3 February 1923. Native of Ambleside, Westmorland. Son of Robert M. and Elizabeth R. Shuttleworth, of Ambleside, Westmorland.
