CAPTAIN JOHN FRANCIS, 1/5th BATTN. (TERRIT.) THE ROYAL WARWICKSHIRE REGIMENT, was shot dead by a sniper on the 2nd June, 1915, while on duty in the trenches on the Ales-sines Road, near Ploegsteert, at the age of twenty-seven. He was the only son of J. H. Francis, of Westbourne Road, Edgbaston, where he was born, and great-grandson of John Francis, who was the first man to be given a commission as Lieutenant in Warwickshire in the Volunteer movement of 1803.
He was educated at Uppingham, and joined the Territorial Force as soon as it was inaugurated, receiving in April, 1908, a commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Battalion of the Warwickshire Regiment, in which he became Lieutenant in October, 1909.
During the mobilisation for the Great War in August, 1914, he was given his company ("D") when the battalion was in Essex. He was a man of fine physique, popular with all ranks, and will be remembered as a member of the Moseley Rugby Club.
Captain Francis was the first officer of the 5th and 6th Battalions of the Warwickshire Regiment to fall in the war.

LOWE, RICHARD CONWAY, M.C., Capt., 1/6th (Territorial) Battn. The Royal Warwickshire Regt., elder a. of Conway Lowe, of Eversley, Somerset Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, by his wife, Marian, dau. of Richard Fanner Todd ; b. Edgbaston, Birmingham, co. Warwick, 12 July, 1804 ; educ. Colet House, Rhyl Winchester College (Scholar). and Christ Church, Oxford (Scholar), where he was studying with a view to taking Holy Orders when war broke out ; obtained a commission as 2nd Lieut. The Royal Warwickshire Regt. 29 Aug. 1914 ; was promoted Lieut. April, 1915, and Capt. March 1916 ; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from April, 1915: was wounded in June, while on patrol duty, and again in Nov., being invalided home ; returned to France In April, 1916: took part In the early part of the Battle of the Somme, and was killed in action near Thiépval 18 Aug. 1916, while leading his company in the face of terrific fire. Buried between Ovillers and Thiépval. He was awarded the Military Cross, " For conspicuous gallantry In France. When directing a working party in front of the parapet, the Germans opened fire and wounded a man of the covering party. Second Lieut. Lowe and a sergeant rushed to his aid, and although t he sergeant was grazed by a bullet and 2nd Lieut. Lowe shot In the thign, the bullet being subsequently found in the wound, they carried the wounded man across the open and through the wire into a place of safety. Second Lieut Lowe had previously been wounded and had been brought to notice for excellent work at the front," and was mentioned in Despatches [London Gazette, 1 Jan. 19161 by F.M. Sir John (now Lord) French, for gallant and distinguished service in the field. He was an excellent shot, and shot many times at Bisley while at Winchester, being captain of the Winchester VIII. in 1913, his last year there and in 1914 was a member of the Oxford Shooting VIII ; unm.

Extract from THE BOND OF SACRIFICE VOLUME I - August to December 1914 - page 258:

LIEUTENANT ROWLAND CHARLES MASON, THE LOYAL NORTH LANCASHIRE REGIMENT, was the only son of the late Rowland Mason, J.P., of Edgbaston, Birmingham, a well-known citizen, for many years closely identified with the social and public life of that city. He was born at Chesleigh, Edgbaston on the 23rd December, 1882.
Lieutenant Mason was educated at Edgbaston Preparatory School and at Malvern College (Lyon, 1897-99), where he was a House Prefect. At School he was a keen member of the Artillery Corps, and upon leaving it to join his father's business he took a commission in the Warwickshire Artillery Volunteers. After becoming an efficient officer in that corps he gave up business, and left the Corps for the Special Reserve, as it was his ambition to belong to the Regular Army. Ile joined the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment as 2nd Lieutenant in February, 1911, being promoted Lieutenant in January, 1912, and went abroad with the 1st Battalion of the regiment, with the 1st Division of the Expeditionary Force. He was present at the Battle of Mons, was wounded at the Battle of the Aisne on the 14th September, 1914, and was brought home to Netley, where he died on the 30th of the same month. It was found that the force of t he piece of shrapnel which wounded him had driven a portion of his identity disc into his lung. (The above particulars were published in "The Malvernian," his College magazine).
His Commanding Officer in France, writing to express to Lieutenant Mason's parents the sympathy of the surviving officers, said : "Your son received his mortal wound at the head of his men in the thickest of the fighting on the 14th September. More can be said of no one. We honour him."
For some years Lieutenant Mason had been Military Critic of the "Birmingham Daily Post," and was the author of a handbook entitled "Hints on Battery Drill." He was a member of the Public Schools' Alpine Club, the Auxiliary Forces, the Red Rose, and the Junior Army and Navy Club.

2nd LIEUTENANT CHARLES FREDERICK MOORE, SPECIAL RESERVE attd. 3rd BATTN. WORCESTERSHIRE REGT., was the second son of the late Edward Carter Moore, Midland Bank House, Edgbaston, Birmingham, and a grandson of Edward Denniss Moore, Surgeon, of Walsall, who served in the Crimean War, and a great-grandson of Brigadier - General George Moore, B.N.I., who was present at the taking of the Cape of Good Hope. His great-uncle, Dr. H. C. Moore, was an officer of the Royal Engineers during the Indian Mutiny.
He was born at Harborne Road, Edgbaston, Birmingham, on the 5th April, 1896, and was educated at King Edward's High School, Birmingham, for which he won his House Colours ; he was also Captain of the School Second Football Team and Junior Cadet Sergeant in the O.T.C., taking his "A" Certificate in November, 1913, and winning, in 1914, the School House Drill Competition.
2nd Lieutenant Moore was gazetted to the Special Reserve in May, 1914, and attached to the 3rd Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. In June he passed the Sandhurst examination, and left for France in October, 1914. He was wounded at Ploegsteert on the 3rd November, and returned to England, and was at Headquarters at Millbrook till the 20th December, when he went back to the front. He was killed in action at Lindenhoek on the 12th March, 1915.
The Officer Commanding his battalion wrote the following account of the circumstances attending his death : "On the 12th March two companies of the battalion and two companies of the Wiltshire Regiment were, ordered to assault a portion of the German trenches. They advanced splendidly, but were subjected to a very heavy fire. He was killed on the way to the trenches, being hit in three places. His body was recovered the following night, and he was buried with six others of his brother officers in the Military Cemetery at Kemmel." A brother Officer wrote of him : "Your son was one of the finest and most fearless characters I have ever met, and I can say without any exaggeration that there was no other officer hi the regiment in whom the Men had more faith. While, therefore, I venture to offer you very deepest sympathy, it will, I feel sure, be a matter of consolation to you to know that your son lived and died a very gallant gentleman."
