This parish is a long narrow strip, about 1 mile wide, running parallel with Ditchling and having Streat on its eastern side. It has an area of 2,095 acres.

PARISH CHURCH

The parish church of ‘ST.MARTIN’ stands on a slight eminence off the Lewes – Ditchling Road. The walls are flint, plastered in part, with sandstone dressing; the roofs have tiles on the north and chiefly Horsham slates on the south. The nave was built soon after 1100, and the original north doorway remains. It is probable that the chancel was reconstructed in the 13th century, and its east and north walls were again rebuilt, from the base, in the 19th century. The north porch incorporates parts of the original 14th-century structure.

NAVE

On the south wall is the war memorial to both wars it reads:

In honoured memory before God of the men of this Parish who gave
their lives for their country in the World Wars.

Below this are listed seven names of the fallen with rank and or Regiment.

From the above lists of 49 names, 19 enlisted in 1914, 18 in 1915, 7 in 1916, 1 in 1917, 1 in 1918 & 3 with no date of enlistment. Of the 49, 7 died & 12 were wounded.

NORTH WALL

On the wall by the north doorway is a metal plaque, which reads:

In loving memory of Frederick Athelstan Fanshaw Baines 2nd Lieut. 4th Batt.
Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Only son of Atlestan Arthur and Katherine Mary
Baines of this Parish. Born Feb. 2nd 1896 killed in action on the night of May
24th – 25th in an attack on the German Trenches at Bellewaarde Wood Near
Ypres.
“Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God”

Next to this plaque is a stained glass window with the following inscription:

To the Glory of God and in loving memory of 2nd Lt. Frederick Athelstan Fanshaw Baines 4th Batt. KRRC. Killed in action near Ypres 25th May 1915, age 19.

SOUTH AISLE

On the south wall of the aisle are listed the names of the Rectors and Church Wardens of St. Martin’s throughout the years. During the Great War years1914-1918, Henry John Claude Torry MA., Rector, and M. K. Hollingdale, & C. A. Money, Church Wardens. It is interesting to note that listed on the War Memorial is J. S. A. Torry and on the Roll of Service is K. & R. Hollingdale and G. & J. Money, did these have a family connection? 2nd Lieut. John Shirley Archibald Torry was indeed the eldest son of The Rev. Henry John Claude Torry, by his first wife, and married Princess Pauline Alexandra Duleep Singh in 1914. She was the fourth daughter of H.H. Maharajadhiraja Duleep Singh Bahadur, GCSI, by his second wife, Maharani Ada Douglas Duleep Singh.

CHURCHYARD

There are no CWCG war graves in the churchyard or family graves noted with an inscription in remembrance to a family member being lost in the Great War.

BATEUP	Samuel Frederick	Private TF/3665, 1ST/5th (Cinque Ports) Battalion T.F.), The Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action, France & Flanders, 31st May 1916, age 19. Born and enlisted Brighton. Son of Stephen & Charlotte Bateup, of 5, The Crescent, Keymer, Sussex. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the THIEPVAL Memorial, France. Panel and Face 7C. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service. Name also listed on the Ditchling War Memorial
EDWARDS	Bertram	Rifleman S/32957, 20th (Northern) Battalion T. F. Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own) – formerly 2299 The Royal Sussex Regiment. Died at Sea, 15th April 1917, age 21. Enlisted Horsham, residence Westmeston. Son of John & Ellen Edwards, of Old Middleton, Hassocks, Sussex. Commemorated on the MIKRA Memorial, Greece. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service.
LEANEY	Henry	Gunner 102356, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died accidentally, France & Flanders, 22nd December 1917, age 37. Born Ditchling, enlisted Brighton, residence Hassocks. Son of Martin & Eliza Leaney of Ditchling Common, Sussex; husband of Mrs. E. J. Leany, of 113, Church Road, Burgess Hill, Sussex. Buried in ACHIET-LE-GRAND COMMUNAL Cemetery Extension, France. Plot II. Row D. Grave 14. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service. Name also listed on the Burgess Hill & Ditchling War Memorials.
NEWNHAM	Leonard	Lance Corporal G/2670, 8th (Service) Battalion. (Pioneers). The Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action, France & Flanders, 14th July 1916. Born Ditchling, enlisted Hurstpierpoint. Buried in BERNAFAY WOOD British Cemetery, Montauban, France. Plot H. Grave 63. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service. Name also listed on the Ditchling War Memorial.
RICHARDSON	Ernest George	Private TF/200374, “B” Company, 4th Battalion T.F., The Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action, France & Flanders, 29th July 1918, age 26. Born Streat, Sussex, enlisted Horsham. Son of George & Louisa Richardson, of North Acres Cottage, Streat, Sussex. No known grave and is commemorated on the SOISSONS Memorial, France. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service.
TORRY	John Shirley Archibald	2nd Lieutenant (Temporary), 12th (Service) Battalion, The Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort’s Own). Died of wounds, France & Flanders, 19th September 1915. Buried in MERVILLE COMMUNAL Cemetery, France. Plot V. Row B. Grave 22. Locally he is commemorated at St. Martin’s Church on 1. War Memorial 2. Record of Service.
WORLD WAR 2
BROMLEY-MARTIN	Giles	In the CWGC site Captain 91446 Giles Neville of the 3rd Bn of the Parachute Regiment A.A.C. is listed as BROMLEY MARTIN (no hyphen.) He died, aged 26 on 26 February 1943 and is buried in grave 2. H. 1. at Medjez-El-Bab War Cemetery. His parents were Granville Edward and Olivia Maud Bromley Martin of Chelsea London.
DEMETRIADI	Richard	Richard Stephen DEMETRIADI 90145 was a Pilot in 601 Squadron of the the RAF (Auxiliary Air Force) He died aged 21 on 11 August 1940 during the Battle of Britain and is buried in Plot 1 Grave 7 at Cayeux-Sur-Mer Communal Cemetery. Hie parents, Sir Stephen Demetriadi KBE and Lady Demetriadi (nee Bates) of Westmeston, gave Ditchling Beacon to the National Trust in memory of their son.
DURRANT	Charles	Charles Alfred Henry DURRANT is listed on the Westmeston memorial as in the 3rd Field Ambulance but a driver in the Royal Army Service Corps on the CWGC site. His service number was T/10673489 and he was 22 when he died on 15 February 1944. He was buried in Anzio War Cemetery. His parents were Charles Henry and Violet Durrant of Westmeston.
PENTICOST	Ronald	Ronald Charles James PENTICOST was the son of Charles and Ada Penticost of Streat, Sussex. A Private, Service Number 5504355, in the 2/4 Bn of the Hampshire Regt he died, aged 24, on the 10 May 1944 and was buried in grave number VIII. E. 16. at Cassino War Cemetery.
PUDDEPHAT	Dennis	136541 Dennis Percival PUDDEPHAT was a VR Pilot in 77 Sqdn of the RAF. He died 14 May 1943 and is buried in Plot 12. Coll. grave 289-293. The are no family details on the CWGC site.
RHODES-MOORHOUSE	William	William Henry RHODES-MOORHOUSE was the son of William Barnard Rhodes-Moorhouse, who won the VC during WW1. Both men are buried in the grounds of Parnham House in beaminster, Dorset. The casualty on the Westmeston War Memorial was 90140, a Flight Lieutenant in 601 Squadron of the RAF, winnint the DFC. He died 6 September 1940.
COMPTON-SIBLEY	Samuel	is listed as 33549 Samuel Anthony Compton SIBLEY on the CWGC site. He was a Pilot Officer in 504 Sqdn, died 15 May 1940 and is commemorated on the Runnymede memorial. No family details are given.
VINE	Arthur	Arthur John VINE. service number 6404087, was a Corporal in the 1st Bn of the Royal Sussex Regt. He was the son of John and Miriam Vine of Ditchling, Sussex. He died 1 February 1944 and is buried in grave VI, E, 8 in Caserta War Cemetery.
