LITTLEHAMPTON, DUKE AND OCKENDEN LTD WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located in the rear wall of the beer garden of the Steam Packet Public House (closed and reopened), 54 River Road, Littlehampton. It is visible from the road but faces the front garden of a private residence and is at risk of becoming obscured by plant growth. It was previously at Duke and Ockenden Ltd., Terminus Road, Littlehampton. It takes the form of an upright, rectangular tablet with splayed edges which is set within a brick framed niche in a garden wall. There are five names listed. In 2008 The Steam Packet Public House closed and the freehold was up for sale. In 2010, apparently during building work, the rear wall was knocked and the memorial came partly away from the wall, and one of the bricks became dislodged. Then in July, 2013, the brickwork was repaired and the memorial was fixed to the wall, following the reopening of the pub.

HANBY, MM	William Alphonsus	Sergeant 48560, Headquarters Special Section, Royal Engineers. Died of wounds, received in the Arras Sector, 6 April 1917. Aged 26 Son of George and Alice Hanby. Born in Dulwich and enlisted in Littlehampton. Awarded the MIltary Medal (M.M.). Buried in Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension. F. 95. See also Littlehampton Memorial
JOHNSON	Arthur Wellesley	PrivateG/18628, 7th Battalion, Royal West Kent Regiment. 18th Division. Killed in action 18 November 1916. Aged 38. Husband of Mrs Gertrude William Johnson of 2, Field Place, Littlehampton. Enlisted in Littlehampton, resident 2A Field Place, Littlehampton. Formerly G/42084, Royal Fusiliers. BILLING	Cuthbert Stanley	Private G/20696, 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Died of wounds in military hospital at Rouen 21 April 1918. Aged 19. Son of Herbert Osborn and Adelaide Agnes Billing of 31, Linden Road, Littlehampton. Born in Abingdon, Berks and enlisted in Worthing. Buried in St. Sever Communal Cemetery Extension, Rouen F. 146. COLGATE	Arthur Watson	[Memorial states Rifle Brigade] Private 532118, 15th (County of Lodnon) Battalion (Prince of Wales's Own Civil Service Rifles). Killed in action 14 September 1917. Aged 22. Enlisted Lodnon, resident Eltham. Son of Thomas and Edith Jane Colgate, of 41, Deansfield Rd., Eltham, London. In the 1911 census he was aged 15, born Plumstead, Kent, assisting in his father's grocery business, resident with his parents, Thomas and Edith Jane, at 6 Erith Road Bexley Heath, Kent. Buried in Birr Cross Roads Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row C. Grave 13.
TEDDER	Herbert [Edgar]	Trooper 790, "A" Squadron, North Somerset Yeomanry. Died 29 November 1914. Aged 29. Son of Helena Tedder, of Mill House, Westbury-on-Trym, Bristol, and the late Edward George Tedder. Buried in Ypresd Town Cemetery Extension, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot III. Row D. Grave 11.
