There are two oddities about the inscription.
Firstly, it does not mention Danehill’s sister village, Chelwood Gate, which also lies within the parish. However, the names do include the casualties from that village.
Secondly, the inscription mentions only forty-five 1914-1918 names when there were forty-seven names prior to the 2001 additions. A close inspection of the engraved names reveals that two of them were added after the original forty-five on an unknown date.
The inscription reads as follows…
GREATER
LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS
THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS
IN GRATITUDE TO ALL THE DANEHILL MEN WHO SERVED ON LAND AND SEA AND IN THE AIR AND IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF THE 45 MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO LAID DOWN THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918
