NEWBOURN WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is in the form of a stone Celtic Cross on a stepped based. There are 3 names listed for World War 1. A further memorial is to be found within the church in the form of an oak wood altar cross with two candlesticks listing the names two men who fell in World War 2. The unveiling of this memorial was 26th May 1950, the architect of the memorial was Mr H Munro Cautley. The names for World War 2 are not listed here.

1914-1918

FROST	David	Ordinary Seaman J/34772, Royal Navy. HMS Vanguard. Died 9 July 1917. Aged 19. Son of Herbert and Mary Ann Frost of Newbourne. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. While at anchor in Scapa Flow, on 9th July 1917, HMS Vanguard suffered an enormous explosion, believed to have been set off by unstable cordite. Only three of her crew of over 800 survived.
PRENTICE	Robert	Lance Corporal 5868, 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment. Died 6 August 1915. Aged 38. Son of Henry and Emma Prentice of Fenn Lane, Newbourne. Born Jan-Mar 1879 Waldringfield and joined the army by the 1901 Census where he is a private at the Colchester Garrison 1911 serving in India, he is with his parents on the 1881 census and then on the 1891 is living with his maternal grandparents at Great Bealings, Suffolk. His brother Charles also fell - see Waldringfield memorial. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Turkey. Panel 1456.
WALKER	Frederick	Private 8854, 2nd Battalion, Cheshire Regiment. Died 8 February 1915. Aged 25. Son of Mrs. Emily Foster of Hemley. Buried at Hazebrouck Communal Cemetery
