ALLENHEADS WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands stands beside the Beaumont Hall, Village Green, Allenheads, Tynedale. It takes the form of a Cornish Granite Celtic style Cross with tapering shaft set on a stepped tapering pedestal; the dedication and names for 1914-18 are on the front of the pedestal, with the added dedication for 1939-45 and one name below. The three other names from 1939-45 are spaced out along the riser of the step. All lettering is of lead attached to the monument in sans serif capitals throughout. The whole is set in a gravelled enclosure surrounded by iron railings

SPARKE	George	Private 75709 or G/75799, 23rd Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) formerly 316614, Northumberland Fusiliers. Killed in action 19 April 1918. Aged 24. Born and resident Allenheads, Northumberland, enlisted Hexham-On-Tyne. Son of Mrs. Jane Sparke, of Intack Cottage, Allenheads, Allendale, Northumberland. Buried at BUCQUOY ROAD CEMETERY, FICHEUX, Pas de Calais, France. Plot IV. Row H. Grave 36.
