BATES

CAYTHORPE

The DEATH has occurred of Albert Victor Bates, second son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Bates, of Frieston. The deceased, who was only 22 years of age, had served four years in the Army, and had reached the rank of Sergeant. He was “demobbed” early in 1919, and, in spite of having been a prisoner of war for eight months, he was looking fairly well on his arrival home. Previous to his being taken prisoner, he had been wounded and gassed. He was taken ill towards the end of June, and eventually was removed to the Sanatorium at Bourne. His parents visited him several times, and always found him bright and cheerful. In spite, however, of every possible care and attention, he gradually became worse, and passed away in that institution on Friday. The remains were brought to Caythorpe on Saturday, and the body placed overnight in the Church. The funeral took place on Monday, amidst many manifestations of sorrow and sympathy, the last sad rites being impressively performed by the Rector, the Rev. F.M.P. Sherrifs. The principal mourners were:—Mr, and Mrs. R. Bates (father and mother), Mr. W. Bates and Mrs. E. Daff (brother and sister). Masters Reg, Fred, Tommy, and Robert Bates (brothers). Miss Beatrice Bates (sister). Mr. and Mrs. Pollard (uncle and aunt), Mr. R. Bates (uncle), Mrs Fulcher (aunt), Mrs. Freeman (aunt), Mrs. Lunn (aunt), Mrs. W. Bates (sister-in-law), Mr. Daff (brother-in-law), Mrs. And Miss Charles, Mrs. Priestley, Mrs. Codd, Mr. J. And Miss E. Jackson, and many other friends. There was a large number of wreaths. Mr. And Mrs. R. Bates and family desire to thank all friends for the many messages of sympathy received, and also for flowers sent.

Private 3924, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 16 November 1918. Aged 33. Son of Mrs. Emma Carr, of 1, High St., Caythorpe, and the late J. G. Carr. Buried in north-east part of CAYTHORPE (ST. VINCENT) CHURCHYARD, Lincolsnhire.

Private 41106. D Coy, 2/9th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, formerly 25624 North Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 21st March 1918, aged 21 years. COOPER

CROWLEY

In the 1911 census Walter CROWLEY was aged 24, unmarried, son of Jerimiah and Mary Crowley, a Labourer in Iron Ore Quarries, born Caythorpe, resident Normanton, Grantham. A death is recorded for Walter Crowley, M.G.C., in 1918, service number 191307. There is a W CROWLEY listed Private 151307, 104th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 14 December 1918. PARR, MM

Private 15325, 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died of wounds 5 November 1918. Aged 32. Born Barkston, Lincolnshire, enlisted Wakefield. Baptised 7 November 1886 in Barkston, Lincolnshire. Son of William Parr, husband of Alice Beatrice Parr, of 69, Haddingley Hill, Sandal, Wakefield. His father William was a carpenter from a family of wheelwrights in the village. His mother Sarah (nee Jackson) was from Syston. By 1891 the family had moved to South Rauceby where William was a foreman joiner on the Rauceby Hall estate. In 1901 Arthur was 14 and living-in as a groom and general help at a cottage next to the Bustard Inn. In 1909 Alfred married Alice Beatrice Wilkes in Wakefield. They lived at 69 Haddingley Hill, Sandal (just south of Wakefield) and had 3 children. He worked at the Wakefield Industrial Society Ltd. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). Buried in VILLERS-POL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Row H. Grave 7.
