AUBOURN AND HADDINGTON WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located outside St Peter's Church, Harmston Road, Aubourn. It takes the form of a stone cross surmounting a tapering square which is set on a stone column that in turn stands on a square-plinth that bears the inscription and the World War 1 names (7 names). The whole stands on a four-stepped base with the World War 2 inscription inset into the top step (1 name). The memorial masons were Messrs. A. J. Tuttle. The memorial was dedicated and unveiled 16 October 1920. Within St Peter's Church are two further memorials in the form of marble tablets with incised black lettering, one to the man who is named for World War 2 on the external memorial and the other to a man who gave his life during the Crimean War.

ANSELL	William	Killed in France 1917. Aged 21. possibly William Edward ANSELL, Private 201725, 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1917. Aged 21. Born and enlisted Lincoln, resident Newark, Nottinghamshire. Son of Fred Herbert and Alice Amelia Ansell, of 13, Kelham Villas, Newark, Notts. Buried in LOOS BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot XIX. Row B. Grave 17.
DOWMAN	James William	Company Sergeant Major (C.S.M.) G/4732, 7th Battalion, Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) formerly2222, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action in France 1 July 1916. Aged 41. Born Attercliffe, Yorkshire, resident Lincoln, enlisted Purfleet, Surrey. Buried in DANTZIG ALLEY BRITISH CEMETERY, MAMETZ, Somme, France. Plot III. Row Q. Grave 4.
LONGMATE	Henry	Private 30921, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action in France 27 March 1917. Aged 26. Born and resident Aubourn, Lincolnshire, enlisted Lincoln. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 3 and 4.
SCOTT	John William	Private 21639, 7th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action in France 26 August 1918. Aged 31. Born Blankney, Lincolnshire, resident Haddington, Lincolnshire, enlisted Lincoln. Son of William and Harriett Scott, of Haddington, Lincoln. Buried in WARLENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave lost. Special memorial 34.
SCOTT	Joseph	Died of wounds in France 1918. Aged 27. No further information currently.
WOOD	Harold Stuart	Rifleman 391897, 9th Battalion, London Regiment (Queen Victoria's Rifles) posted to 6th Battalion, London Regiment (City of London Rifles). Died in France 2 March 1919. Aged 26. Native of Aubourn, Lincolnshire. Son of Thomas and Frances Wood, of 37, Alexandra Rd., Reading, Berks. Buried in STE. MARIE CEMETERY, LE HAVRE, Seine-Maritime, France. Division 64. Plot VIII. Row L. Grave 4.
WOOD	William Frederick	Killed in France 1917. Aged 39.

FOTHERBY	Gerald	Marine PLY/X 1905, H.M.S. Glorious, Royal Navy. Died at sea 9 June 1940. Aged 23. Born 9 February 1917. Son of Thomas and Ellen Maria (née Speed) Fotherby of Aubourn. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 43, Column 2.
