KEYHAVEN WAR MEMORIAL

Keyhaven is a hamlet and was a fishing village, this trade has declined and the main draw is now tourism. The Keyhaven War Memorial is located on the village green in Keyhaven, Hampshire. It takes the form of a wooden Calvary cross with pitched roof mounted on a plinth surmounting a base that stands on an octagonal, five stepped, stone base the lower level contains seating; on the plinth is a plaque that bears the names of the fallen from World War 1 with a further plaque bearing the World War 2 name. There are five names listed for World War 1 and one for World War 2. The memorial was first dedicated in 1919 by the Rev. Charles Edgar Matthews, L.Th.

Private 14798, 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. Died of wounds in United Kingdom 14 September 1915. Aged 34. Born Milford-On-Sea, Hampshire, resident Keyhaven, Hampshire, enlisted Brockenhurst, Hampshire. Husband of Mary Ann Berry, of 194, Green Road, Winton, Bournemouth. In the 1911 census he was aged 29, born Milford-on-Sea, a Bricklayer's Labourer, married to Mary Ann Berry with five children, resident Keyhaven, Milford on Sea, Hampshire. Buried West of the church in MILFORD-ON-SEA (ALL SAINTS) CHURCHYARD, Hampshire.
FOSS Herbert
Private 268109, 2nd/7th Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment formerly 26337, Hampshire Regiment. Killed in action 6 September 1917. Aged 44. Enlisted Brockenhurst, Hampshire. Husband of Martha Foss, of "Sunnyside," Golden Hill Road, Hordle, Lymington, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 23 to 28.

Petty Officer P/SSX 31532, H.M.S. President III (S.S. Goolistan), Royal Navy. Missing supposed drowned at sea 23 November 1942. Aged 46. Born 14 September 1896 in Brighton, Sussex. Son of Richard and Elizabeth Kennard; husband of Bessie Kennard. He was last resident 7 Gloucester Street, Riverside, Cardiff. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 62, Column 2.
