THe main, town, war memorial for Colchester is to be found outside Colchester Castle in the High Street, Colchester. The memorial takes the form of a three-stepped base surmounted by tall pedestal and a winged victory on an orb holding an inverted sword and laurel wreath. The memorial is flanked by figures of St. George standing on the dragon and Peace. Within the memorial is buried a casket with the names of the World War 1 dead within it. In 1922 a ceremony was held in Colchester, at which time the casket was deposited in the pedestal of the monument. The sculptor was Henry C Fehr. The memorial does not bear the names of any servicemen or women on its exterior.
