MORLEY WAR MEMORIAL

There are both internal and external memorials that are located at St Matthew's Church, Church Lane, Morley, Erewash, Derbyshire. The external memorial is located close to the building. between the West and South doors, in St Matthew's Churchyard. It takes the form of a white limestone cross on a square, tapered, pillar, a square pedestal and a three-stepped base with pinned-lead lettering and numerals forming the inscription at the base of the pillar along with the names. There fourteen names for World War 1 and two for World War 2. The same fourteen names for World War 1 are listed on at the west end of the south face of the north arcade of St Matthew's church and takes the form of a wall-mounted, rectangular, bronze, plaque with superimposed oval cartouche with a laurel wreath in relief draped over the cartouche; on the plaque are a foliation in the upper corners, roses in bottom corners and small, raised crosses at head and foot. with the inscription in a raised, upright, capital lettering and the names in three columns.

Private 40458. 4th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment, formerly 26241 South Staffordshire Regiment. Died of wounds 5th May 1917. Son of Caleb and Fanny Rosa Clowes (nee Riley) of Lime Farm, Morley. Born 1895 Ipstones, enlisted Derby and resident Morley. Commemorated Etaples Military Cemetery. XVIII.H.11A.
CLOWES William Thorneycroft
Private 117634. 3rd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) attached 2nd Battalion. Died of wounds 9th October 1918. Son of Caleb and Fanny Rosa Clowes (nee Riley) of Lime Farm, Morley. Born 1898 Morley and enlisted 23rd May 1918 Derby. Commemorated St Sever Cemetery Extension. S.II.N.6.

Rifleman 9120. 6th Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps, transferred to 585593 Eastern Counties Labour Corps. Died 6th August 1918. Son of Charles and Julia Daws (nee Dolman) of Morley. Husband of Sarah Ann Daws (nee Jones, now wife of Samuel Trusswell). Born 1881 Morley and enlisted Ilkeston. Commemorated Ilkeston (Park) Cemetery. Screen Wall.
GREENFIELD Ronald William
Lieutenant. 1st Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Killed in action 23rd October 1916. Only son of Herbert Bunce and Edith Mary Greenfield (nee Bridges). Born 1897 Wyaston, Edlaston. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 16B and 16C.
HASLAM William Kenneth Seale
Captain. 4th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 27th April 1917. Son of Sir Alfred Seale Haslam (Kt) and Lady Ann Haslam (nee Tatam) of Breadsall Priory. Born 1893 Little Eaton (as census). Commemorated Tilloy British Cemetery. I.C.16.
HUNT Charles Henry
SDGW has Private 29059 Labour Corps, formerly 69074 Durham Light Infantry. CWGC has Private 29059 49th Company Labour Corps, formerly 46652 10th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (Soldiers Effects merely has 49th Company, graves documentation also has Lincolnshire Regiment). Killed in action 11th September 1917. Son of William Henry and Fanny Hunt (nee Allsop). Husband of Fanny Hunt (nee Smith). Born 1884 Morley, enlisted Derby and resident Little Eaton. Commemorated Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery. XI.H.10.

Possibly William Hunt (as internal memorial). Driver 806344. D Battery, 269th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 25th September 1918. Parentage unproven. Husband of Alice Hunt (nee Towle). Born c1882 Bridge Gate, Derby (as census) and enlisted Derby. Commemorated Ville-Chapelle New Military Cemetery. V.E.2. Note: no proven Morley connection found.
LEGGE Frederick Tom
Private 13748. 6th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment. Died of wounds 26th April 1917. Son of Thomas Sylvester and Emma Legge (nee Rawles) of Three Horse Shoes Inn, Morley. Born 1897 Markeaton, enlisted Winchester HAM and resident Morley. Commemorated Etaples Military Cemetery. XIX.K.7A.
LOWE Percy
Private 57437. 5th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, formerly 51437 Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). Died of wounds 22nd August 1918. Son of Samuel and Kate Elizabeth Lowe (nee Walters). Born 1899 Breadsall Moor and enlisted Derby. Commemorated Bagneux British Cemetery. IV.D.33.
PEPPER Henry
Private 32711. 7th Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 22nd August 1918. Son of Henry Arthur James and Sarah Pepper (nee Darley). Husband of Minnie Florence Pepper (nee Shurvin). Born 1886 Normanton YKS, enlisted Derby and resident Morley. Commemorated Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery Extension. III.D.1.

Gunner 810631. A Battery, 232nd Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 47 Casualty Clearing Station 14th September 1917, aged 22 years. Son of William and Annie Radford (nee Morley) of Morley. Born and enlisted Derby. Commemorated Dozinghem Military Cemetery. VIII.A.14.
SKEVINGTON John
John Skivington as 1890 birth record, John Skevington on all other records. Gunner 77976. 49th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery (CWGC has John Skevington, SDGW has Joseph Potter Skevington with identical numbers and dates of death). Killed in action 6th September 1917. Son of Arthur Isaac and Sarah Elizabeth Skevington (nee Hunt). Born Morley, enlisted Ilkeston (attested 11th December 1915 and mobilized 9th May 1916 appears under brother Joseph Potter Skevington name, brother survives war) and resident Morley. Commemorated White House Cemetery. II.A.6.
TOPHAM Henry Angrave Cecil
Second Lieutenant. Indian Army, attached 1st Battalion Welsh Regiment. Killed in action 25th May 1915. Son of John Henry and Dorothy Marianne Topham (nee Angrave) of Morley Hall. Born 14th October 1891 Derby. Commemorated Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension. I.F.36.

Sergeant (Wireless Operator/Air Gunner) 1219352, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. 29 Operational Training Unit. Killed in action 1st March 1943 (crewing Vickers Wellington Z1666 on night leaflet dropping operation. Believed electrical fault caused loss of communications, aircraft descended to fix position and hit high ground). Parentage and age unverified. Commemorated Horsley (St Clement) Churchyard.
WASLEY Charles Ronald
Gunner 1502735. 16 Battery, 2 Heavy Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died between 26th and 27th April 1941. Son of George Albert and Eliza Ann Wasley (nee Revill) of Morley. Born 1918. Commemorated Athens Memorial. Face 3.

The internal memorial takes the form of a wall mounted horizontal, metal, oblong plaque:
